A Love Song for Ricki Wilde: A Book Review

My experience here was okay. The character dynamics and the dual‑timeline structure were interesting at first, and the introduction of the mystery had me curious. I liked the sense of atmosphere, the Harlem setting, and the way the book blended romance with a touch of magical realism. I can see why that mix really works for some readers who might enjoy this more than I did.

But somewhere around the halfway point, I struggled to stay engaged. Several plot turns felt predictable to me early on. I was willing to overlook that at first, but I found myself enjoying the story less and less as it went on. The romance — and the way it was written here — just isn’t my style. It also took me off guard, perhaps because the cover reminded me of a different kind of story — something more in the Taylor Jenkins Reid lane — which shaped my expectations without me realizing it. Unfortunately, the romance wasn’t something I connected with at all. By the end, I was reading quickly just to see where it was going rather than because I cared about the journey or the characters.

This book had promise, but it didn’t quite land for me — though I’m sure it will find readers who connect with its tone and themes more than I did. It reminded me a bit of romantasy in its vibe, so if you enjoy those, this might be worth a try.
